Restoration of an old/antique necklace, set in 18Kt Gold, Adorned with Rubies, Emeralds and Pearls

Restoration of an Old/Antique Necklace, set in 18Kt Gold, adorned with Rubies, Emeralds and Pearls.

Old jewellery (including antique jewellery) set with precious gemstones, notwithstanding their commercial value, have significant sentimental and sometimes historical importance. Restoring these pieces of jewellery requires an in-depth understanding of the period/s when they were made, and the knowledge of the process applied to their making. Additionally one must possess extreme skill in gem setting, gold craftsmanship, and knowledge of preservation techniques to preserve the nature of the item and its authenticity. Bengal Jewellery prides itself in having the expertise to undertake delicate restoration work on almost any type of jewellery.

Background

On the bench we had an old/ likely period necklace (as pictured). The necklace featured a traditional setting of Burmese rubies (likely of “Mogok” origin), along with vivid green Columbian emeralds and natural old pearls (likely from Basra in Iraq)**.

The heirloom necklace had broken gold framework, dislodged and damaged gem stones, and minor abrasions and dirt due to its age.

The necklace's gold framework broke at two crucial joints, compromising its structural integrity. Working on a necklace set with emeralds and pearls is challenging due to its delicate nature and sensitivity to heat and pressure. Special care is required to preserve the original structure and maintain the gemstones' lustre.

**Origin of Emeralds/Rubies and Pearls are based on the provenance of the necklace and have not been certified by any gemstone certification laboratory

Challenges
in Restoration

To preserve authenticity of the necklace, goldsmithing and setting techniques are matched to the original craftsmanship. Structural reinforcement was applied during repair of the gold framework without altering the original design. Finding natural rubies and emeralds of similar cut, colour, and clarity as compared with the damaged stones, presented a challenge during restoration, so as to ensure that the final piece appeared flawless and robust. The structure was reinforced while preserving the handcrafted detailing. Traditional setting techniques were employed to secure the stones, matching the original style of the necklace.

Outcome

The structural integrity of the necklace was fully restored.

The severely damaged gemstones were replaced with near same quality stones as practicable and were indistinguishable to the original.

The period image was carefully preserved, ensuring that the necklace remained a cherished heirloom.

The necklace became fit to be worn and enjoyed again by its proud owner.
